2004 FLOCK COMPETITION REPORT

Judges: Nigel Wernham & Tom Stayt

It was a pleasure to see Dorset ewes performing well under so many different management systems, whether producing pure bred breeding stock, prime lambs for the supermarket or private meat sales. It was also a pleasure to meet members who were keen and enthusiastic to promote the breed. At this point both of us would like to thank each and every one of the exhibitors for their hospitality and the welcome we received whilst visiting, we would liked to have stayed a lot longer with them but time did not allow this to happen.

Moving on to the actual judging, we both thought that the standard of stock rams was not as good as the ewes. In out opinion we think that if improvement were made with the ram, this would produce better quality stock. This was noticeable as some ewe lambs were not as good as their mothers, also some flocks were very uneven with different types of ewes.

Congratulations to the winners and well done to all that entered, on the whole the classes were very strong and in some cases very close. Don't be disappointed if you have not won a prize, we are sure that with your enthusiasm and hard work future results will come.

Now for just a few light-hearted moments we will never forget:

  • The slippery down hill four wheel drive course from Mr. & Mrs Huxter!
  • After the white-knuckle drive around the Devon lanes and the Welsh countryside we have entered ourselves in the RAC rally next year!
  • Finally, thanks to David, Ruth and Spot the dog for a memorable ride around Galmpton - we don't think that Spot went a lot on David (Schumacher) Rossiter's driving or was it that he had too many bran flakes for his breakfast!!
