UK DORSET HORN AND POLL DORSET SHEEP BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION

WHY DORSETS?

Dorset Horn sheep have been with us since at least 1707 and the Poll Dorset (without horns) since 1956. They are adaptable to a range of climatic conditions and blend well with the countryside of the UK and Ireland.

They are unique in their ability to lamb NATURALLY at any time of year and were, for this reason, traditionally associated with Christmas in the 19th century. Dorset sheep were said to be the only breed that could be depended on to supply lamb at the festive season.

The meat from Dorset lambs is of especially high quality. It has a high proportion of meat and low fat and bone content. Because they mature quickly, Dorset lambs require less in the way of drenches and inoculations and, because they lamb naturally at any time of year, a continuous supply of FRESH lamb is available without any interference with nature. The breed is well suited to organic farming, providing a year round supply of lamb and a self-perpetuating flock that avoids the need for unknown health status introductions. For those who keep dairy sheep, the Dorset is a preferred breed because of the rich and abundant supply of milk from ewes.

The wool from Dorset sheep is of the highest quality. Even in these days of a depressed UK wool market Dorset fleeces are relatively highly valued.

WHERE CAN I BUY IT?

Dorset Lamb can be found on many supermarket shelves and in many butchers shops. If you don't see it displayed, ask for Dorset Lamb by name and enjoy traditional top quality fresh British lamb at any time of year.
